The Fried Food Extravaganza

monday was a holiday in the US (labor day) so some friends of mine and i went to the fried food extravaganza, aka the MN State Fair. apparently it's nationally known as one of the better state fairs around, but i only know it as the place where you can get anything on a stick: alligator on a stick, spaghetti and meatballs on a stick, deep fried candy bars on a stick, etc. and every year they have a new feature. this year's was a deep fried sausage w/a hard boiled egg in the middle on a stick. gross.

went w/eleni's boyfriend sean, eleni, may, and eleni's cousin dio (who refused to get in the photo).

of course there were lots of things to see: baby farm animals, blue ribbon flowers, and 813.5 lb pumpkins...

next to the gigantic pumpkins, there were other supersized veggies. may was a fan of the large scalloped squash (no that is NOT my hand!)...

i wanted this dude's furry prize. it was so huge he had to carry it on his back. (yes, this one is my hand!)
besides horticulture, MN is also known as the gopher state. have no idea why we're represented by a rodent, but someone way-back-when apparently thot it was a good idea. my friend jeremiah (actor, cameraman, street performer extraordinaire) stands in as one every year, and since i haven't seen him in a few months, it was uber exciting to find him amongst the masses.

have to say that while this is not something i recommend experiencing every year, it's worth trying at least once. state fairs are hokey and educational, but offer INCREDIBLY GOOD people watching. definitely midwest americana at its finest.
