Lost In Translation

met w/my tandem partner for the first official round of practicing language skills today. it's not so bad considering it's only 60-90 mins of my life i have to give up twice a wk in exchange for improved Korean business conversational skills, but it's odd where these chats can go:

me: how long will you be in the US to work on your PhD?
him: about 5 years.
me: wow. and then what will you do?
him: i'd like to find a job here in the US.
me: you want to stay here? you don't want to go home?
him: yes. i think the US is nice and much easier to live in than Korea. my mother says if i find a Korean wife here, i should marry her here.
me: you want to get married while you're here too?
him: oh yes. i think it's a good idea. i'd like to get married and i'd like to stay in the US. (looking at his watch) what are you doing for dinner?
it was about then that i decided to end our session and told him i had a lot of studying to do. am trying to give him the benefit of the doubt due to the language barrier, but it was hard not to instinctively scream and run in the other direction...

OMG. That is unbelievable. Do you need me to come up and start telling this character he can go back to Wisconsin or Korea or some place that has the goods he's looking for? Or maybe that his talk about PhD's and the like isn't enough to impress you, and you are hanging out with 10 guys right now so he doesn't have a chance, but you are more than willing to help him in his quest?
