Happy Singles Awareness Day!

happy singles awareness day (aka happy valentine's day)! in Korea this is the day where girls traditionally give their guys a box of chocolates. and if you're not dating someone, no worries! you have another chance to give/receive gifts exactly 1 month later. Mar 14th is White Day, where guys traditionally give their girls a box of chocolates. and if you missed that cuz you're still not dating, again no worries! exactly 1 month later on Apr 14th is Black Day, where all the singles get together to bitch about the couples and eat 짜장면 (ja-jang-myun).

good thing i like 짜장면. hee-hee! :)

as a single i really wasn't looking forward to today and all the sappy crap that goes w/it, but it ended up being a really nice day:

  • mom called me at 8:30am to wish me a happy v-day. while it's sad that my mom knows i don't have a valentine, it was still really sweet that she called :)
  • one of my co-workers brought in cookies.
  • sent a thank you note to an uber-high-up person at work for his time yesterday and good career advice, especially the part about looking closer at a particular business within the company. 2.5 hours later i got an email from the HR manager of that division looking to talk w/me ASAP (proving it is all about WHO you know...).
  • got a sandwich before my night class and the guy behind the counter gave me a lollipop.
  • i chatted w/john.
  • had an exam tnite that went REALLY WELL cuz it looked just like our homework and our instructor reviewed everything w/us before the test. even got out early enough to have a happy-singles-awareness-day beer w/carrie at the Bulldog (yeah for $2 PBR!).

  • came home to lots of happy v-day messages and e-cards (thank you Roy!).
  • got notice that they've found a tandem partner for me to practice my Korean with (he's a Korean PhD EE student, and no mom and dad, he has NO chance!)
  • new baby news -- congrats Piyali and Justin!
  • new baby-to-come news -- congrats Jami and Robbie!
  • and a call from Jen M. in Omaha who luvs me so much she's willing to listen to me nosh on peanut butter and crackers over the phone...
also got a really nice note from mike in geneva reminding us what's really important when looking at life and love:
"the happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way."
on a day when there seems to be a lot of undue pressure for singles to find love, i'm finding myself quite happy w/what came my way. xoxo
