Sound Off

this is rather disturbing.

late last night while doing homework i ran across headlines of North Korea's presumed underground nuclear test. this is both maddening and incredibly sad.

DPRK has been threatening to do something for what seems like the longest time in an effort to get attention, and its warnings have continually been treated (at least in my perception) as just idle threats by the Bush administration.

yes, the US is much bigger and can take on a tiny place like North Korea. yes, North Korea would ultimately do more damage to itself than to anyone else. but i believe unconfirmed nuclear potential in the hands of a madman requires a bit more scrutiny. a round of failed multilateral talks and public name calling as an axis of evil just doesn't cut it. there needs to be a more urgent response, and now it looks like one might be coming...

in the last 24 hours Kim Jong Il has finally captured the global attention he's been striving for and a new seat on America's agenda. his face has moved to the front of every major news source, only rivaled by the melee of nations screaming for sanctions.

and while hard sanctions will be the likely reaction to DPRK's questionable success, they do nothing but punish the people of the country. Koreans there are already subject to starvation, human rights violations, and a dictatorship that diverts its resources to building military forces.

to be honest, i'm not sure what scares me more: the threat of nuclear arms so close to family or the bureaucratic BS that will likely follow. regarding nuclear power North Korea announced, "it will contribute to defending the peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and in the area around it."

how ironic. the BS has already started...
