Chinese Opera & the Summer Palace

our hosts for the conference kindly arranged an evening out w/chinese opera. it was interesting to watch, but after a while got a bit long (as i was told by one of my chinese colleagues, they always do...).

apparently they only use 3 instruments for the music. i thot one sounded like a cymbal til someone at our table leaned over 10 mins into the performance and asked when they were going to stop beating on the garbage can lid...

the last place i got to sneak in a visit was the summer palace. this was just a quick romp thru the grounds on a particularly overcast day.

despite the clouds, the gardens are gorgeous. i could easily vacation here if it weren't in a communist country that supresses free speech...
