back in 2001 when b, susan, and i were roomies on harriet ave, we had a coffee table book called "The Big Damn Book of Sheer Manliness." this book comprises of all things male and burly, ranging from the different parts of a cow you can eat to honoring john wayne to 100+ names for boobies. received it as a gift after finding it at a party and confining myself to the corner so i could laugh at everything in it. i luv my man book.and so did susan's dad. her parents were visiting one wknd, and her dad ended up spending several hours reading the book. he talked about it for so many wks afterwards, susan and her husband carl later bought him his own copy.
and then a few wks ago susan called to say her dad and her nephew used the instructions in the book to build a potato gun. immediately afterwards they built a bunker and fired away.
and while you may not find this as amusing as i do cuz you've likely done it yourself in college (or had friends who did and let you shoot socks down the apt hallway or w/oranges at their neighbor across the street...not that i would know), you have to understand that susan's parents are sweet, quiet folks in their 70s. evidently the fun just gets better after retirement!
so when i got today's voicemail it was hard not to laugh out loud. apparently susan spent the wknd at her parents' cabin, and she got to fire the potato gun several times. and when they ran out of potatoes, they shot cucumbers. WAY TOO FUNNY!
i'm not sure what amazed her more: the fact that her dad built it or how much fun it was. evidently firing vegetables thru 6ft of PVC piping into a corn field is something you really have to experience in order to appreciate.

You know, I love thinking about potato guns in a general way, but thinking about Susan's dad with a potato gun (and cucumbers as ammo) is even better!
